With Open House on a few weeks away, and the first half of spring semester just about over, it seems appropriate to share why I chose LGO and if it has lived up to my expectations.

I have a feeling that right now most of my readers have just been admitted to LGO. CONGRATULATIONS!!! I will never forget that phone call from Don, the sleepless nights that followed it thanks to pure excitement, and the FedEx box I waiting patiently on my front steps for.

So, Why LGO?

Well...I only applied to LGO. But I'll tell you why I picked it from the get-go and why I quit my job to actually attend.

The People
I don't even know how to explain how awesome my classmates are. It's such a humble, awesome, group of people... It's a diverse bunch, but also a group who has fairly similar career interests so it's pretty unique. Definitely something to experience for yourself- come to admit weekend!!!!

Leadership Focus
The L in LGO carries a lot of weight. The leadership curriculum for LGO is like no other. It continues through the entire two years, even while we're on internship. I didn't know how extensive it would be when I applied, but people kept referencing their leadership classes, ethics classes, and honest, open dialogue about issues that our classmates and alumni have actually faced in business that we might also face.

MIT & Faculty
As a whole, MIT is an awesome school. Getting to take classes with people who are truly experts in these fields was no-brainer. I mean, these people wrote the books.

The Job Opportunities
I knew LGO had a crazy-high job placement rate. This is a big factor when deciding to quit...I knew I would want an income after school :) LGOs have phenomenal access to jobs at partner companies, and other companies that recruit at MIT.

2 Degrees in 2 Years
It's really a great deal when it comes to time and money- if operations is what you are interested in. It's pretty awesome.

Did it live up to these thoughts?
So far, absolutely. And then some! I know i'm missing a lot here, but if I had to do it all over again, I would pick LGO time after time.Jane Guertinhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/05486555678008414939noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-6570797215875258696.post-9812085279195239252014-01-28T06:26:00.005-08:002014-01-28T06:30:12.131-08:00Interviewfest & Recruiting Recap

Well, after a long hiatus, I am back with a quick post! This fall was probably the most hectic semester yet- maxing out on courses, recruiting, and trying to spend a significant time with my family in light of a health issue one of them has been facing. I thought I would first write about a few things I remember from Interviewfest for those class of 2016 hopefuls who are looking for some help!

It's hard to believe it has now been 2 years since I was getting ready to fly to Boston for my interview. The time goes so quickly! So, here you go:
1- Be able to answer, "Why LGO". Makes sense. A passion for the program and operations and a clear thought as to why this program fits your career/life path would be important I would think.
2- Know your application- take a little time to re-read the stories in your essays, and know your resume so you can answer any questions from your application.
3- Don't worry if you can't "read" your interviewer. I had absolutely no idea how well I was doing(or not doing!)- It was different for me than most job interviews.
4- It goes really quick!
5- Know your stories. Sloan recommends the STAR format- Situation, Task, Action, Result. Basically- have the story complete- What was the situation, what did you have to do, what did you do and what was the result.
6- Relax! Have a good time and enjoy interviewfest!!

I am hopefully done, myself, with interviewing for a while! This fall was busy with trying to go to a lot of lunches about companies, interview with them, find time for second round interviews and maybe a visit meanwhile trying to do well in classes!! The busyness of full-time recruiting depends a lot on what type of job or industry you are interested in going into. For me, a lot of the recruiting was in the fall. For others, the spring will be busier. And, I'm sure the people who were interviewing for big consulting companies were a lot busier than me!

In the end, I decided to take an offer from Converse. The company that makes the iconic Chuck Taylors and Jack Purcells. My role will be Product Development Performance Manager- a lot of project based work, and working heavily between the creative designers and the factories all over the world. I'm super excited to be working for them. While it was an extremely difficult decision, as there are so many great companies that recruit at Sloan, this one felt right. And, it's nice to be back with the Nike family. (Converse is owned by Nike) They're located just outside of Boston and will be moving their offices downtown once they finish a pretty cold wharf building restoration.Jane Guertinhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/05486555678008414939noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-6570797215875258696.post-11316650354227750442013-09-25T17:09:00.002-07:002013-09-25T17:30:12.362-07:00Back to School For the LAST TIME EVER... now that's not to say I won't take classes again in life, but I'm pretty sure this will be it for degree programs.

I loved Portland but wow did I miss New England!

It has been an adjustment getting back into the swing of school after being gone for six months, and on top of coursework, there is recruiting! So here's a summary of what's been going on for the past few weeks....

Classes
This is my first semester of classes that I have chosen completely myself and I am really excited about them. Here's the line-up:
Operations Strategy- Self explainatory! Don, the program head of LGO, is one of the teachers for this class- talk about having an expert for a professor! The cases are all really interesting operations cases and we discuss how their decisions were and weren't in line with the company strategy/vision.
EnActing Leadership- We'll be performing Macbeth. This class has a lot to do with leadership, public speaking and we get to do a play. It's a lot of fun, and totally out of my comfort zone.
Power & Negotiation- I think this will come in hand in life. Great professor, and always good to practice negotitation skills.
Leadership Stories: Literature, Ethics & Authority- Lot's of great readings, movies & discussion. Our LGO leadership professor also teaches this class. It is a look at leadership through literature. I think this class goes by the fastest of all of my classes.
Engineering Systems Analysis for Design- All about designing for uncertainty. One of the most important pieces to systems design these days is including uncertainty from the beginning- this class teaches us techniques to do that, and allows us to do some of the homework around our own thesis project.
Architecting & Engineering Software Systems- For this class, I have to write a blog with a teammate. You should check it out here: http://cybersecurity.mit.edu/
I'm learning a ton on Cyber Security, and we're focusing our own work on healthcare data on the cloud.

Recruiting
Recruiting is underway. I feel pretty supported by Sloan and definitely by the LGO office as I try to figure out exactly what I want to do and go after it. I'm constraining my search primarily to New England so that helps by narrowing my search, but also makes me think extra hard about companies I like a lot that are outside of the area. I know I want to stay in some sort of manufacturing company, but even that is broad. And when it comes to specific roles, who knows! For now my days are filled with working on cover letters, talking to companies, researching companies, going to company presentations, interview prep, interviewing, and making sure I don't forget what it is that I want to do. It's easy to get caught up in what everyone else might be doing, and it's important to take a step back and think about what I want to do.

LGOs(& roommates) at SWIM's 80s C-Function!

Midstream
Last week was midstream review for the on-cycle interns. It was awesome to see everyone and really cool to see the work that they've been up to so far at internships. It absolutely reinforces the value of LGO interns to companies, and my classmates never cease to amaze me with how talented they all are. We had a lot of catch up sessions, leadership sessions, and recruiting prep too. The programming for LGO is super expansive, and I feel, prepares us really well for job searches as well as jobs themselves. We had guests talk to us about everything from Business Law to doing mock interviews during the week.

Life outside of school
Things have been hectic, given all of the things I just talked about, but I'm trying my best to stay in shape a little bit since I worked relatively hard at it while I was at Nike. So, in a few weeks I am running the Boston Athletic Association 1/2 Marathon. This race benefits Dana Farber, and I'm running on the Dana Farber team, with my older brother. I am unbelievably proud of our fundraising efforts to date!

I have also just decided to sign up for a biathlon. Crazy. I've never shot anything besides a BB gun and that only happened once, and it was a red rider one like in the Christmas Story! But, where my boyfriend lives in VT, they are having an Oktoberfest celebration and one of the activities is a novice biathlon- an 8k run which includes 4 shooting stages. I will absolutely be reporting back on this!

And I've been back to cooking- it's been an adjustment to the gluten free life (I officially have celiac) but it has been fun to try out variations of recipes that I used to make. And, while now i pretty much pack all of my meals for school and there is that added complexity to life, I am finding that I eat much healthier now! Tonight I played around with a chicken-veggie enchilada casserole....zucchini, butternut squash, chicken, onion, enchilada sauce and a little cheese... pretty yummy:

Hello LGO Bloggosphere! It has been months since my last blog. My apologies to those of you who read this blog. I'm back on the grid. Since it's been a long time, here is a fast-forwarded version of the past few months, and my next blog will pick up with back-to-school and recruiting.

My internship continued to be fun, demanding, busy, and challenging. It was a great experience and my work has been transitioned to another LGO who is now at Nike full-time. One of the biggest benefits to the 6-month LGO internship is the ability to do a project that "has legs" or "is meaty" enough to be adapted by the company. I felt like I really had the opportunity to lead the project, and make strategic decisions.

Nike continued to prove to be an exciting place to work with a lot of growth opportunities in supply chain. While it is a big company, there is an entrepreneurial spirit about the company and a willingness to try new things and listen to their interns! Going into my internship I was a bit hesitant about this cross-functional project that all interns do- each project team is a mix of undergrad students and grad students from different departments across the company. It ended up being one of my favorite parts of the summer- getting to know people from so many different backgrounds, quickly, to come together to form a really awesome presentation- with some incredible videos was really cool. It was a great way to get out of my supply chain mindset for a little while!

Outside of Nike I had a chance to enjoy the West Coast with a trips to Whistler, Vancouver and San Francisco.

After Nike I had a week in Connecticut to reset my mind and get ready for back to school!- More on that next time.

See you soon bloggers!
Two weeks ago, a few of us had the honor of attending one of
our LGO classmate’s wedding in Vermont.
And, on a Saturday afternoon before the wedding, what else would LGOs do
but visit a factory. Down the street
from the wedding location was the Magic Hat Brewery. Sadly they weren't running the lines while we were there, but it was still a good tour. We were a tad critical of their warehousing skills. But, i'm sure there's method to their madness.

And, of course, to prove that we clean up nicely, here is a picture (courtesy of Jan) from Chris and Laurels wedding. We
could not be happier for them! It was a beautiful weekend on Lake Champlain. It was great to be back east with everyone before Jan (& Tey) are off to Switzerland for Novartis, Chris (& Laurel) are off to Ireland for Novartis, Andrew is off to Puerto Rico for Amgen and Conor is off to Seattle for Boeing. Our class is literally scattered around the world now for internships. But, we're keeping up with one another through emails and requests to the class for help on topics that we studied over the past few months.
Last night two of the other Sloanies, Ken & Tatiana, had us all over for dinner. It's awesome to have so many of us out here, and all working for Nike. There is a fairly large MBA crowd, and lots of lunch & learns, social events, intramural sports, etc. coming up. I'm glad I'm as far into my project as I am...I see the next two months being crazier than ever. It's hard to believe that us off-cycles are 2/3 done with internship!

This weekend I ventured up to Seattle to meet up with the other LGOs in the Pacific Northwest. Ben and I took advantage of Nike's summer hours and were on the road by 2:30 on Friday. Hitting almost zero traffic, we made it up to Seattle in time for dinner. We ventured to a neighborhood Italian place and had delicious pasta, cheap local beer and caught up on our internships.

Saturday we took in a Mariners game and walked around Seattle. It's a beautiful city (..at least it was when the sun was out...). The highlight of the Mariners game for me, and I think all of us, was the fact that they closed the retractable roof while we were there- Safeco field is a beautiful civil engineering work. Sunday we hiked around the Snoqualmie area. The outdoor recreation accessibility is incredible out here. Sunday night we were all out together and toasted the half-way point of LGO. It's hard to for us to believe we only have a year left. And sad.

On Saturday and today, we had the opportunity to meet up with two different LGO '15s who are preparing for the trek to Boston and start of classes next week. It is pretty neat to see how LGOs are looking out for one another, and the bond we have before even starting the program.

In the spirit of the conversations we had with both of them, here is a quick run down of some advice I have for the class that's about to start.....it should, of course, be taken with a grain of salt!

1) Set expectations up-front with your summer team. Be clear & honest about what your goals are for the summer, how you work best, what your expectations are for each other, etc.

2) Go to the sailing pavilion for the 4th of July. Get there early to grab some picnic tables.

3) Hang out with the class as much as you can, but don't have FOMO (fear of missing out). You won't be able to do everything.

4) Focus on learning the material and not stressing out about the grades. It's more fun when your goal is the learning process...and the grades will come with it.

5) Get to know the TAs, they are super helpful!

6) Take time for the Muddy Charles and Thirsty Ear.

7) Get comfortable with not being on top of things on your own. Learn to lean on your team. There is lot's to keep track of in the summer.

8) There is a gym on the east side of campus called the Alumni Gym...I realized it way too late into the year!

9) Lunch at the food trucks near the medical building is the way to go- delicious and cheap.

10) Plan things. Don't be shy about just shooting and email to the distribution list- I bet whatever you want to do, someone else would want to do too.

I'm jealous of you all! Sometimes I wish I could be back at the beginning again. Enjoy it. It will be stressful, but make sure to have fun.

This is a lot of material for a post...so I will try to keep it brief.

Boston & Midstream

I've sat down to write a few times about the past few weeks, but have been lacking the words...and still am. I know I will never forget where I was and what I was doing as the information unfolded about the Boston Marathon bombings and tragic death of MIT's Officer Sean Collier. It was a heart-wrenching week and I still cannot comprehend it. I don't think I will ever have the mental capacity to understand why these events took place. Throughout the week, the support offered by the MIT community both staff and fellow students was incredible to witness. Not to mention the outpouring of communities around the world who reached out to Boston. It has definitely made me more proud than ever to be a Bostonian (even if i'm only a transplant). Throughout the week I kept saying, I just can't wait to be home (in Boston). And I was fortunate enough to be heading back there for Midstream review.

Midstream could not come at a better time. It was important to get our whole class back together again, the memorial service for officer Collier was that week and offered great comfort, and I was able to see my family. From and LGO front, it was super exciting to see what my fellow off-cyclers are doing for their internships(pretty cool projects happening right now), and energizing to hear about how spring semester was for the on-cycles and hear how excited they are for their internships.

We had some fun while we were back together, celebrating 30th birthdays, catching up at the muddy, c-function, and of course karaoke at the thirsty ear.

Portland

Screen Door Brucnh

Our time in Portland has been busy recently! Since my last update I've gone to an Oyster tasting: Bivalves and Bubbles, experienced Portland Derby, attended another Timbers game, went to my first Trailblazers game, and checked out a whole bunch of new restaurants. And, of course, have been busy on my internship project! Which i'm happy to report, is going very well. I can't say I'm looking forward to writing my thesis- but I think liking my project will make it a lot easier.

And to the 2015s, I've got some advice for you coming soon! :)
I can't believe it's been a full year since my class's Open House. After a year of knowing my classmates, it's hard to believe sometimes that we've only known each other for a year.
While my advice to the incoming '15s would be, go to open house- it's a bit late for that.
But, at this stage in the game, take advantage of the facebook page and getting to know people a little bit before the summer comes. I am jealous that you are just beginning your LGO experience. Have fun at the three-class party tonight!
IPT!
This past weekend we got back to Portland from IPT Brazil. (It was definitely sad to be coming back to Portland and not headed to Boston with the rest of our classmates. Fortunately, mid-stream review is right around the corner.) I would recommend to anyone to do the International Plant Treks. Our experience in Brazil was definitely a once in a lifetime opportunity, here are some highlights and pictures (courtesy of Jessica):
Sao Paulo
Sao Paulo is a HUGE city. And it's layout is about as far from a grid as possible. The traffic as people warned us was crazy. Very aggressive drivers, lots of congestion. Glad that we had people to drive us around and we didn't have to navigate it.
The first two days in Sao Paulo were free days to explore the city. We checked out some of the big parks, cathedrals, and mercado. At the mercado, there are fruit vendors will all sorts of fruits that you never see in the US, lots of salted fish(Something I didn't try and don't need to ever try), and amazing sandwiches. We got the pastel (fried meat pastry) and bologna sandwiches. Delicious!
The first words I learned in Portuguese, besides thank you, were quejo (cheese), chopp (draft beer), and Caipirinha well, how to pronounce it). These proved to be pretty much the only words we needed to survive.

Sunday night we treated ourselves to a traditional brazilian barbeque at fogo de chao (a very brazilian company). We learned here, the hard way, that bottled water can be expensive at restaurants... 6.5 real * 32 bottles of water = 104USD.
Monday started our plant tour adventures with a trip to Dell. The Dell visit was perfect to have as our first visit (once we made it to the factory....we had to circle around town a few times first...). They took us through a few presentations around doing business in Brazil and the unique trade considerations and logistics of Brazil and South America. Brazil's trade policies encourage business to be done in Brazil because the duties and other restrictions around imports are so strict. Dell brought in a professor from a local university who specializes in logistics, and a speaker from a company that handles the last mile logistics for many companies in south america. Dell was also a very gracious host with lots of coffee, tropical fruit salad, pao de quejo (Cheese bread), and short bread cookies. The factory itself was awesome. Very lean, very organized. They had an area they called the moonshine where a group of employees are able to work on process improvement ideas in a low-cost, low-risk environment They really seem to embrace the ideas around continuous improvement and the worker moral was extremely high.
Monday night we had one of our most difficult language barrier experiences. We went to what ended up being a pretty tasty sushi place, but what started out as a bit of a mess. While we had some Spanish and Italian proficiency in our group, we completely lacked the ability to speak Portuguese. So, when waiters just started bringing us plates of food before we ordered anything we had no idea what was going on. It turned out the restaurant mainly does an all-inclusive all-you-can-eat deal. It was a bit difficult to explain that not everyone wanted the all-you-can eat option, but fortunately the waiters were patient enough and another patron who spoke English helped us out. In general, everyone was very patient with our inability to speak Portuguese and worked with us to understand what we were saying.

Tuesday we had a jam-packed day with a visit to GM and Embraer. GM was one of my favorite plant visits. We saw the stamping process up close- they have lines that haven't been converted to being fully-automated, so the operators feed the metal sheets into 2,000ton stamping machines right next to you. Pretty awesome to see. They also took us through the painting area which we didn't get to see in Detroit on Domestic Plant Trek. Speaking of Domestic PT, it was really cool to have the opportunity to compare two different facilities for the same company. The Sao Paulo facility, while it's almost 100 years old, was just like the Detroit facility. They are constantly making line improvements, embracing lean manufacturing, and the workforce seemed pretty happy there too.
Wednesday we had a day off to see the beach and travel to Manaus. The beach was beautiful and exactly what we needed at the half way point. We had another adventurous meal where the wait staff didn't speak english but we survived! This trip was very much a new experience for me when it came to communication and, while frustrating at times, I'm glad I had it. I'm used to places like France, Italy, Germany, Switzerland where either I knew the language enough or the cities I visited were very bi/tri-lingual.
Manaus is in the state Amazonas, and it truly is a city in the middle of the jungle. But a decent sized city. Manaus is ~ 2million people, and a free-trade zone which drives a lot of business and manufacturing. Samsung was super excited to have us, and that tour was awesome too. Mainly because it was a type of manufacturing that I had never seen before. We saw the full process for cell phones and TVs. Everything from injection molding, PCB manufacturing, assembly, testing, etc. They were incredibly hospitable and even got our bus to come back later in the evening and take us out for the night.
They reserved us a table at a local outdoor bar with live music and we had the whole night to get to know some Samsung employees and experience the local culture.

My last day was Friday with our Amazon adventure. We traveled towards the Presidente Figueiredo waterfalls where we walked into the jungle to climb a tree (really scale a rope up to a branch). A super tall tree. This was followed by a swim in the waterfalls and local tapioca food.
Sadly Tacy and I had to leave Friday night while the group stayed through Saturday. While I was exhausted by the end, I learned so much during the week. I would now be open to working in South America for a period of time, and I definitely appreciate languages and communication a lot more. The friendliness and hospitality of the Brazilians was awesome. And, getting to be back with my classmates made the trip that much better. I definitely want to go on the next international plant trek as there probably wouldn't be another opportunity for me to see so many factories, meet so many Brazilian business leaders and experience the culture they way that we did in just one week.
LGO International Plant Trek has begun. I made it to São Paulo this morning after a full day of travel. We (Tacy and I) left our apartment in Portland at 10:00am Friday- traveled go Dallas and onto Miami and then finally, four timezones and 15hrs of sitting on a plane later) arrived in Brazil 9am Saturday.

We met up with most of the LGOs and SOs at the airport this morning and after checking into our hotel, went out for a traditional lunch and checked out a huge park in downtown.

Had my first drink of coconut water straight from a straw in a green coconut-pretty yummy, accidentally ordered a non-alcoholic beer- should have learned some key phrases before the trip, and successfully navigated the grocery store for breakfast food-wish I could get this cereal in the US

Time to get ready for dinner. Will write more as the trip goes and promise to share pictures!Jane Guertinhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/05486555678008414939noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-6570797215875258696.post-77906546345270550162013-03-12T21:58:00.004-07:002013-03-12T21:59:52.192-07:00Portland: Shoes, Volcanoes and Breweries

I can't believe we've been in Portland for five weeks already. The time is flying by and the time I've spent here can be broken down into three categories: Volcanoes, Shoes and Breweries.

I'll do my best to give a quick overview and highlights from the past four weeks, but first...
CONGRATULATIONS to the 2015s!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! I remember the day Don called me like it was yesterday. I can't believe it has been an entire year- it's amazing how much my life has changed in 12 short months.

Shoes- 5 pairs of shoes and 1 pair of flip-flops later...

My internship is going well- I am enjoying Nike so far. We've gotten into a good routine of hitting up the (very nice) gym in the morning and then getting our work done for the day. From what I've heard the summers in Portland are amazing, so I'm trying to get as much done in the early months as possible. Lot's of meetings and data gathering. I am realizing now how much I took for granted in my last job- the simple knowing who to talk to for what, what the systems where, how to request access, what is good on what days in the cafeteria, etc etc. My project is exciting, well, to me at least, I'm working on an optimization model and the business processes that go with it. More to come on that next time.
I have now had the opportunity to ski Mount Hood twice and make my way to ski Mount Bachelor for a day- both of which "mountains" are volcanoes. Mount Hood is "potentially active" with a 3-7% chance of eruption in the next 30 years according to Wikipedia. From the top of Hood and Bachelor there are incredible views to the other volcanoes- St Helens, the Three Sisters, Mount Jefferson and others.
LGOs on Ski Trip

After a few days in the pacific northwest we headed east to Austin(only to head back to the west coast a few days later!) Dell and Austin were worth it. We had great Tex-Mex food on 6th street and a fun night out- lots of delicious margaritas aaaand Shiner Bock, dueling pianos, mechanical bulls, jenga and big buck hunter.

The next morning we were at Dell early for breakfast tacos and a talk from Michael Dell himself. It was incredible to hear the future strategy of the company from the very person who started the company from ground zero. We took a tour of campus and had the opportunity to talk to a lot of other senior leaders in the company.

Following Dell it was back to the west coast for Amgen and a few days in Santa Monica. I was surprised by how much I enjoyed this part of the country. Amgen had an incredible campus and has gotten me thinking even more about Biotech. We saw so many parts of the process, including filling, packing, quality, and their pilot plant.

When we got back to Santa Monica, a group of us decided to head out on a four mile run to In-N-Out burger. I'll be honest, it wasn't as great as I thought it would be, but it was pretty good. The milkshake and animal-style fries were delicious. We had all day Saturday to hang out in Santa Monica- I spent the day mostly at the beach, grabbed fish tacos and ate them under a palm tree with a few classmates, and sat on the beach for the sunset. It was in the 80s! It was incredible. I think I could actually live in Southern California, something I never thought before Plant Trek.

On a whole, Plant Trek opened my eyes to some companies and locations that I wouldn't have wanted to work at before but am now considering. And, as many have asked, our class got along really well. I was semi-concerned about how it would be to travel with ~50 people, and thought that I wouldn't want to see anyone after the trip was over....but I was wrong. It really helped our class to bond even more.

A group of us ended Plant Trek with an LGO Ski Trip in Utah. I got to ski Alta 4 days and Snowbird once. It snowed while we were there and I ended up extending my trip by a day....I'm wishing I was still skiing there right now.... :) But, I bought a new pair of skis and am psyched to be heading to Portland for my internship where I can ski Mt Hood.

Congratulations to all of you who received
interview invites so far. That is a HUGE step. I will never
forget checking the gmat club blog all the time at work just waiting to see if
people had heard yet. Likewise, most of
my classmates and I have been reminiscing about what interviewfest was like for
each of us, and I want to share with you some of our stories and some advice.

I had one of the first interviews
on Friday morning. I sat with other
interviewees making awkward chit chat- of course slightly nervous and
uncomfortable. They had given us a few
handouts and a nametag when we arrived. A
few minutes before my scheduled interview time, in walks a man in a suit with a
folio. He says something like, “Jane? Ready?”, and I nervously start packing up all of my stuff and once I stood up
he goes “Ha, just kidding, I’m interviewing too.” And that was my introduction
to Bradley. Needless to say, Bradley was also accepted and we ended up on the same summer team. It's important to be able to joke around and relax. Don't get too nervous about your interview (or anything else for that matter while you're here)

There were actually a lot of us
who met that weekend. I’ll be honest, it’s
weird- a bunch of people who are there won’t get in, but it’s still worth
making friends with people because you never know.

So here is my advice (and some
advice from classmates I talked to while we were sitting in the airport):

Be yourself.

Review your past few years and
think of all of the stories that you have.
Don’t pick a story for each question- that gets too complicated and you’re
more likely to trip over yourself in the interview. Instead, just think of all of the projects
you worked on, team projects you had, times when you had to deal with a
tough teammate, times when you had to influence someone etc. Then, I think the best way to start flushing
out the details is to sit and talk to someone you’re friends with and explain
to them all of these different stories, in talking about them you’ll remember
more and more of the story.

Don’t worry if your interviewer is
straight faced. I thought it would be
more like the full-time job interviews I had when you pretty much know at the
end if you have a good chance. I had NO
idea when I left my interview. I thought
it went well, but my interviewer took a lot of notes and probed at some
questions, we had a little chit chat but it was pretty serious.

Know your application. My interviewer had some sentences in my
essays highlighted and asked me questions like: “what did you mean by this”, “Can
you elaborate more on this”, etc.

STAR. Sloan likes the STAR method for answering
questions. It stands for Situation Task
Action Response. Make sure you give the
background, what you had to do, what you did (this is important!) and then what
happened. Give a well-structured
response.

Write a thank you note. This should be second nature by now, but
always write a thank you!

Know the partner companies. This is a huge part of LGO. Know what companies you would want to work for
and why.

Sunday morning came early after
some serious jet lag and a cold. We
traveled from Boston to Holly Springs, North Carolina. After dinner with some local alumni and
Novartis staff it was (relatively) early to sleep for an early wake up for our
first plant tour.

The Novartis facility gave me a
new appreciation for biotech companies.
The Holly Springs is state of the art, recently built for their flu
vaccine. While the whole process of
actually growing the cells, infecting them, inoculating them and harvesting
them to make a vaccine is super complex, they did a great job of breaking it
down for us and showing us where each part of the process takes place. It was pretty much the first time I thought I
could maybe work for a company in this industry.

After Novartis we were off to the
airport and on our way to Detroit for GM.

I had a minor hiccup with this
part of the journey- left my cell phone on the airplane. Thankfully, last time I lost my phone (there
is a pattern here….) I learned about the “find my iphone” app, and made sure my
phone had that turned on. I called US
Air, they found my phone and were able to send it to the hotel with two of my
classmates bags that had been lost.
Thank you US AIR!

GM was incredible! In the matter
of our few hour tour we were able to see almost all of the steps it takes to
make a car…all the way from the initial stamping of metal blanks to body shop
where parts are welded together to final assembly where the electronics, seats,
interior, engine, etc are added to the car, and finally we saw them start up
and drive off the line to the final testing.

In the afternoon we participated
in a simulated work environment building our own wooden cars as an assembly
line- something they use to train their workers on some of the lean manufacturing
and line balancing concepts. It was so
much fun.

Finally, they took us to the GM
Heritage center where they have everything from Indy cars to 1903 buggy looking
cars to old corvetts, etc etc etc. It
was awesome. We had dinner among all of
their old cars, including some of their very odd looking concept cars.

After GM we were back in our hotel
in Indy and simulated work environment building
our own wooden cars as an assembly line- something they use to train their

Now we’re on our way to
Indianapolis. Today is a, very welcomed,
travel day after two long tour days. We’re
driving down- all 53 of us on our coach bus as I write this. Tomorrow we’re off to an Amazon fulfillment
center! I’m anxious to get a peek at how
they run their warehouses! Off to finish
my book and take a nap, will send more updates along the way.

While during finals week most
people were worried about studying and getting things organized for vacations,
I was also moving out. As my parents

In reality, I will only be on campus one week in January so I figured it
wasn’t worth a whole month’s rent and in February I am moving to Portland for
my internship.
home for a week- after a few months in the Warehouse I welcomed the chance to
cook in a full sized kitchen! We had a
very French Christmas, I made a Bouche de Noel and served St. Germain cocktails
and together we made Bouef Bourgingnon.
Lots of hanging out on the couch, fires in the fireplace, good drinks
and good food made for a great break.

Switzerland! One of the other LGO ‘14’s
families has a chalet in Switzerland and invited us to go skiing. A group of us took her up on the offer. I had
some flight trouble getting to Switzerland and a layover in Montreal (which
allowed me to get some much needed Poutine so it wasn’t that bad), but after an
otherwise painless flight and train trip, I arrived in Champery,
Switzerland. Skiing the Alps, a dream
come true!

the second largest ski area in the world.
It spans a good portion of the swiss and French alps. One run you might
be in France and the next in Switzerland.
I’ve put a few photos below of our trip. We celebrated New Years with a
party, a lot of Champagne and fireworks, followed by a rest day at the thermal
baths. While we were at the baths, it
was snowing in the mountains making for a very powdery next day of skiing. The lunches while we were skiing were on par
with the skiing itself. One of my new
favorite foods (also pictured below) is tartiflette. It’s sliced potatoes with lots of cream,
swiss cheeses, bacon, butter. Baked hot,
bubbly and creamy. YUM! We also had classic fondue, rosti, and other
delicious swiss fair. Not to mention the
absurd amount of swiss chocolate I brought home in my suitcase!

For everyone who made the decision to apply to LGO yesterday, good choice! And, Congratulations for finishing your applications. Now the wait begins. I remember this time last year vividly, waiting anxiously for weeks to hear about interviews. My best advice- keep yourself preoccupied and off of the blogs (at least until after the new year).

For those of us first years, we are in the middle of finals week. Most LGOs have one final left. Econ, Thursday morning. As you can tell, I'm procrastinating my studying a bit right now ;)

Last week and the week before, our final assignment for Leadership & Ethics (an optional LGO seminar), was a paper on what leadership means to us. Over the course of two class periods, each person read (or talked about) their paper. I have to say this was one of my favorite moments of LGO so far. Everyone in our class had a different take on the assignment and very thoughtful and insightful comments on leadership. It is incredible how far we have grown in our leadership journey over the past seven months and how proud and lucky I am to know these people. These are the type of ethical, principled leaders that I would want to work with/for any day.

Between writing final papers, studying for exams, finishing projects, etc. we have still had a little time to celebrate the holiday season. Last week two of my Sloan core teammates hosted Hanukkah parties, we had a baby shower for one of the '13s followed by a "Fort Awesome" party. Today I had a holiday pot-luck lunch with my engineering department and am looking forward to a final LGO party of the semester once we're done with finals. Here are some pictures to sum up other activities of the past few weeks:
Why I chose LGO & Some Application Tips

(the LGO balloons from Ambassador Day)

I can't believe it has been a month since my last blog. Needless to say the past four weeks have flown by. We have gone through the off-cycle internship recruiting and I found out that I will be heading to NIKE in February! I could not be happier with my internship. I'm looking forward to furthering my supply chain in a fitness-oriented organization and getting to try out Portland with two other awesome LGOs.

I will post more about my internship later, but if you're reading this, you are more than likely a potential applicant and with applications due just over two weeks from today, I wanted to blog a bit about why I applied to LGO and a few bits of application advice.

Why I chose LGO...
This is a bit of a tough question to answer because it evolved over time. I started looking at LGO two years before I applied (at the time, it was called LFM). The two main things I was looking for in a program were (1) better general business knowledge (2) more engineering theory. LGO was a perfect combination of the two.

The Sloan part of LGO has so far been great at giving me knowledge I was lacking in business. Little things like how to really read a company's Annual Report and how to compare companies that might account for things differently. Understanding marketing analytics and other key tools used by groups that I hope to manage, or will work with, is really important to me.

The engineering side of LGO is full of the theory behind things I was doing at work and things that we weren't doing but maybe could have been doing.
In all honesty, I didn't feel like I needed to leave my job and get an MBA-- a lot of you might feel like this too. It's not a must have in a lot of companies, but as some of my classmates and I were talking about today, if you can afford to take the time off, there are so many intangible benefits from going full time. The networking and recruiting of the full-time program can't be beat by part-time.

Once I visited MIT, I was sold on LGO. The people were normal. Again, being candid, I wasn't sure what a group of MIT engineers would be like. Let alone engineers that are up for getting two degrees in two years! They must be crazy. And while maybe we're crazy, we do a really good job at balancing our academics with fun.

One aspect that I didn't consider when applying, but in hindsight it's a great part of the program, the "L" in LGO, is prominent. The leadership curriculum that LGOs have access to cannot be matched elsewhere. We are in a very unique position to have leadership curriculum woven through our two years, take small seminars where industry leaders speak candidly about issues they've faced, and have leadership frameworks to use and reflect on.

A little advice on the application....
Make it your own. Write about what projects or issues have excited you. If you're stuck in an essay- even though there are just two weeks left, try a new topic. I had incredible writers block and realized I was trying to force something that just wasn't right. I realized that I would hopefully get an interview and could hopefully talk then about the project I was trying to force into the essay.

Edit, edit, and edit. Read, re-read and re-read again. Spend the time to make sure you are saying what you want to say and that you are saying it well. 500 words is really short. Take the time to get your story across the way you want in those few words.

Have someone read your essays without telling them the subject and then have them tell you what they thought the essay prompt was. Strange but effective. Someone gave me this advice when I was applying and it really helped me make sure I was on target. This is probably even more effective if you are applying to multiple schools and are trying to re-use an essay (which I don't recommend....start fresh!)

Research the program. Check out MIT Open Coursewear to see the material some of the classes cover. Look at the what classes make up the track you're interested in. Read our blogs. Etc. The application will practically write itself if you feel like LGO is where you belong.

Finally, and very important advice, start the online application early. There are a lot of questions to answer and check boxes to hit in addition to uploading your resume. You can start it without submitting. So if you haven't, go online, make an account for the application and start filling out what you can and getting familiar with it.

Good luck!!! Jane Guertinhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/05486555678008414939noreply@blogger.com2tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-6570797215875258696.post-66227450973413113172012-10-26T15:10:00.003-07:002012-10-26T15:10:45.284-07:00Resumania

I want to add a quick blog post today about how incredibly collaborative and helpful my fellow 2014s are. Tomorrow, all resumes are due for first years. Yesterday the CDO (Career Development Office) hosted Resumania. An opportunity to have a final 10minute review of your resume by one of their skilled staff members. While that was helpful and great, what was incredible to me was the support in the room where everyone was waiting for their appointment.

People were passing their resumes back and forth, giving each other extremely valuable advice from things they noticed- whether they had experience from reading resumes at work, or from new things they had learned. It was really cool to see consultants helping people moving from finance to consulting tailor their resume, or people looking up examples of how to do things in the resume books for each other and bouncing ideas off of each other.

While a lot of people are looking at some of the same companies, the support that Sloanies have for one another is incredible. There is no doubt a feeling of... "Yeah I want to do well in recruiting, but I want all of you to do well too." The word competition is not in anyone's vocabulary and I think it's a big part of what makes Sloan a great place to be.Jane Guertinhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/05486555678008414939noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-6570797215875258696.post-6005053868797145612012-10-22T11:05:00.002-07:002012-10-22T11:05:43.967-07:00A week in the life...

It's been hectic around campus with three midterms last week and one this morning. I have, as a result, neglected my blog for a few weeks.

I thought I would post a look at the week-in-the-life of an LGO. I took a week out of my google calendar(which I would not survive without!).

Weeks typically consist of a lot of class, team meetings, LGO seminars, club meetings, and social events like C-Functions (~bi-weekly culture functions put on by a different club each time) or Wednesday nights at the Beacon Hill Pub.

We try to find time between classes to get work done, but inevitably each hour of the day seems to fill up!

Life as an MBA student

(Funny looking pumpkins at apple picking this weekend)

Today marks the start of our fourth week of fall semester classes. This week I feel like I am finally falling into somewhat of a routine. Somewhat in the fact that every day is different, and every week is different. There are club events, social outings, company presentations, company chats, team meetings, etc etc that vary from day to day. But, in general I am starting to get the hang of being on campus from 8:20am to 6pm and taking advantage of the free moments to get some of my homework done. And, I've finally been able to work in a semi-regular work-out schedule. We'll see how long I keep it up...but for now I'm back to running in the morning with hopes of running the Chilly Half in November.

While I do feel comfortable and seem to have found my "routine", it is still hard to imagine that it's only been four weeks since the start of orientation. I have already bonded with my core team, and gotten to know so many of my classmates. I never thought the day would come that I could just go to E62 for lunch on a whim and run into a bunch of people to sit with. Now, I walk through the food lines and by the time I come out I have three other people to sit with. It's amazing the sense of community that has already formed.

I think some of the large contributors to the sense of community are the clubs. I have signed up for a few clubs and they have already given me an opportunity to start to get to know people outside of my class and outside of my cohort/ocean. We've had a C-Function for SWIM already and are starting to get planning on many of the fall activities for our clubs.

Not only have I had the opportunity to meet so many people, the caliber of the people I have met is incredible. The experience that everyone brings to the table is so varied and substantial. In Econ there are economists adding to the conversation, CPAs clarifying points in Accounting so on and so forth.

Academically, I have never read so much in my life. I've never considered myself a big reader, but I am loving it. One of the things I was looking for in getting my MBA was a better sense of the current global culture and to stay up to date with the world news. Many of our professors, especially Econ, are great at bringing in real world current examples. It's amazing how many things you read in the Economist, WSJ, or NYT are relevant for class each day.

Needless to say, I wake up every day excited to go to school. Every day. It's a pretty neat feeling.

MIT Sloan Light & Bridge Ceremony

As the application deadline is quickly approaching, I want to share a little bit about MIT LGO Ambassador Day. If you are at all considering LGO, or are just the slightest bit interested in what it's all about, you should attend Ambassador Day.

If I could pinpoint the moment I knew I wanted to be an LGO, it was at Ambassador Day last year. The student blogs and LGO website were super helpful in understanding a lot about the program, but it was actually getting to meet people that solidified my decision. Not only did I get to meet current students, but I got to meet people who would become my future classmates. That was key.

So, what exactly is this Ambassador Day?

Ambassador Day is essentially an LGO Open House. You will have the opportunity to go to a class, meet with current first and second year students, meet alumni, faculty and staff, tour the campus, meet your future classmates, and really start to feel what it is like to be an MIT LGO. You have the option of coming all day, or just part of the day. If you work in the area and can't take the day off, or can't get to Boston early enough, you can come for the Information Evening session only. In both the day and evening portion we will have good representation of students, alumni, faculty and staff. Also, important to note, significant others are more than welcome to come. We will have a few SOs at lunch and your SO can learn a little more about what it's like to be a significant other during the LGO program.

This year I will be co-chairing Ambassador Day with one of my best friends from LGO. And, interestingly enough, she and I met at Ambassador Day last year. I cannot recommend this event enough. Here are the details and information on how to sign up:

Who: YOU & SOs & Any Prospective Students

What: Ambassador Day and/or Information Evening. Come learn first hand about MIT LGO.

When: November 5th

Where: MIT

How: Sign up on the MIT LGO website here: http://lgo.mit.edu/apply/visit/

If you can't make it to Ambassador Day, I highly suggest participating in the Ambassadors Visit program. In this program you can sign up to spend a day with an LGO. Not only thought these programs can you, as I've said, feel what it is like to be an LGO, it will also probably help you write the section of your application where you talk about why you want to come! Just something to keep in mind!

MBA OrientationAfter a week off and trips to NYC, Maine, and Connecticut fall semester has begun. Vacation was great. I had the opportunity to celebrate my birthday with some of my best friends from undergrad with twelve of us in NYC over the first weekend of break. My friends surprised me with macarons from Laduree, only to be followed by more macarons from my visit to Laduree later in the weekend. We were able to snap this picture right before finding out they don't allow photography (what is it, a museum? i dont think so!)

On my actual birthday I got to attend my first Red Sox game ever. Unfortunately they lost, but I can't wait to go back. I hate to say it, but I think I like Fenway better than Wrigley now.

Toward the end of break I moved into my new digs. I'm living in one of the on-campus graduate residences. It's great. Super convenient and pretty nice considering the price, location and amenities. Here is a view from the roof-deck:

So, orientation...

I didn't know what to expect coming into this week. Over the summer I have gotten to know my fellow LGO classmates extremely well and become very good friends with them. I was a bit anxious and nervous to meet our 365 other classmates. How was my new cohort going to be? My new summer team?

It turns out this week was incredible. I could not be happier with my fellow Indian Ocean mates (Jai Ho!). And my Gannet core team. Over the course of the week through social events, classroom activities and team building exercises I feel like I am really starting to get to know a lot of the class. It's definitely exhausting and I can see how easy it is to rely on the 47 other people(LGOs) that I got to know this summer, but it is awesome to get to meet even more people with incredible backgrounds. The class is so accomplished yet so humble. The week concluded with the last plant tour for LGOs this summer- New Balance. It was one of the coolest factories I've ever been to. We got to see them making the 993s while we were there and 'm now the proud owner of some Made in the USA New Balance 993s.

Here is my new core team from our team-building day (courtesy of my teammate Nathanaelle, thank you!)
I am psyched to be working with these people all fall. If the past few days are any indication of how we will work as a team, I will be more than thrilled.

I am looking forward to starting classes on Tuesday and a kick off Sea Function boat cruise. I'm not looking forward to the work to be done before then though.... Jane Guertinhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/05486555678008414939noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-6570797215875258696.post-60977387055769337862012-08-12T19:24:00.000-07:002012-09-01T16:35:49.054-07:00Weekend Before "Finals"I am happy to report that our hard work last week paid off. We completed our full Design of Experiments on our awesome paper helicopters, wrote our team leadership paper, finished our optimization of Domestic Plant Trek and presentation, turned in our second to last Statistics homework, performed Antigone as a class and finished our lean tools homework. All that's left is finishing my analysis of a process from my old job and I'm done with summer semester. The time has flown by!

Since we got most of our work done early, I was able to thoroughly enjoy my last weekend in Cambridge of the summer semester. (I'm starting to realize that doing things early pays off. I wish I had realized this in undergrad)
Over the course of the weekend I did see a lot of my computer, and drank an obsessive amount of caffeine and was fueled by incredibly unhealthy snack food but I'm feeling in good shape for the last week!
Team Five at Lean Simulation

The first day of LGO we were given our summer team assignments. Come to find out we spend A LOT of time in our teams over the summer. Most classes allow you to work on homework as a team, and some even have you hand in one homework for the whole team. We also have smaller three people teams within our teams of six for working on Operations Management cases.

I can't say it enough (and probably don't say it enough), that I do not know where I would be this summer without my team! We get along very well and have become friends. We also have been really clear with each other about our goals and help to keep each other on top of all of our work. It's an incredible amount of work to keep track of and between our masterful Team 5 & LGO Calendars we generally know what we should be working on and when things are due. And we have fun too- last night we had a team pot luck bbq complete with SOs and kids. It's amazing to think we've only known each other for eight weeks.

A few weeks into the semester we had to complete a peer feedback review on our teammates and a team feedback section on how well we felt our team was functioning. We overwhelmingly scored our team well. Once we got the results of the feedback survey, we sat around as a team to discuss our feedback (things to keep doing and things to improve on). It was a very worthwhile exercise and something that I hope we continue to do. One of the greatest things we have to offer each other in our team is feedback so that we can all improve our leadership and follower-ship. This peer feedback came in conjunction with a paper for our leadership class on our leadership goals. It was a bit of a daunting task to put into words what my leadership goals are for the next two years, but it was also one of the most useful assignments to me- to have to put on paper and articulate things that are sometimes hard to define.

We have just started the second to last week of the summer- it has flown by! Between this week and next, all of our final projects and papers are due. I am happy to say that Team 5 is ready for it. We've been planning out blocks of time on our calendars and will hopefully be done with all of our work before the end of this weekend. Let's hope we haven't underestimated the amount of time these things will take. We've tried to do our best with work-life balance throughout the summer and here's hoping that continues during crunch time. I will let you know how it all turns out soon!
